Coaches - Get to know us

Joonas Merelä - Disc Golf Coach

My name is Joonas Merelä, and I am one of the first professional coaches in disc golf. Currently, I work with the Finnish National Disc Golf Team as well as several professional players.

I have been involved in the sport since 2019, although I personally started playing disc golf in 2017. What is especially close to my heart is holistic performance coaching. I have been working full-time in disc golf coaching since 2021. At the moment, I work with individual coaching clients and have been part of the coaching staff of Disc Golf Team Finland since 2022.

My work consists of comprehensive athletic coaching, including training program design, strength and conditioning coaching, throwing and technical skill coaching, as well as organizing various educational events and training camps.

Education

  • Orthopedic Osteopath – Institute of Orthopedic Osteopathy
  • Strength and Conditioning Coach – Atletica Training
  • Specialization Studies: Sports Medicine and Coaching – South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences

In addition, I have completed numerous continuing education courses related to coaching, sports science, biomechanics, sports injuries, and rehabilitation.

Leevi Koskenniemi - Disc Golf Coach

My name is Leevi Koskenniemi, and I am a coach with a strong passion for disc golf. I work as a coach with the Finnish Disc Golf Association as well as at the Varala Sports Institute, where I coach at junior development camps and sports high school camps.

In addition, I coach several athletes on a weekly basis, most of whom are junior players, as well as one professional-level player.

My own disc golf journey began in 2016, when I was studying to become a sports instructor at Kisakallio Sports Institute. Since then, I have been actively involved in the sport. During my most competitive years, I competed as a semi-professional player on the Finnish Pro Tour and in several professional-level competitions across Europe. At the same time, I also studied physiotherapy for several years.

Currently, I am completing the final year of my Bachelor’s degree in Sports Coaching and Management at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, specializing in coaching.

My main areas of interest in disc golf performance development are mental skills and the physical demands of the sport.

Education

  • Sports Instructor – Kisakallio Sports Institute (2018)
  • Physiotherapy Studies – LAB University of Applied Sciences
  • Bachelor of Sports Coaching and Management (Student) – Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences
  • Sport-specific courses in sprint canoeing and disc golf (I have also planned and coached these courses).

What to expect from the Camps?

This intensive three-day camp offers an in-depth introduction to the holistic performance development of a disc golfer. The camp content is based on solid scientific research and years of practical coaching experience.

During the camp, we will focus on themes such as:

  • Skill training
  • Throwing biomechanics
  • Mental skills
  • On-course sport-specific training

Participants will receive a comprehensive player package including general training programs (skills & physical training), as well as Latitude 64 products (total value €200).

The camp partners are Latitude 64, Tech Disc, Merrell, and Dave & John’s. Among all participants, we will raffle a comprehensive Latitude 64 product package, Merrell’s shoes, and one Tech Disc.
